Credit unions face growing competition. As of March 2015, credit unions assets are $1.17 trillion which is 5.5% growth from March 2014. Nonetheless, credit union assets are miniscule in comparison to those of the 100 largest banking institutions in the country:

With only a little over $1 trillion in assets, credit unions hold 1/14th of the assets of the top $14.5 trillion held by the top US banks. Only 20% of credit unions have more than $100 million in total assets while 67% of banks are this large. Over the last 20+ years, the market share of the large banks has increased by over 75% while the smaller banks have experienced a steep decline of 60%. Amongst small financial institutions only the credit unions have held their own with a 20% gain in market share during this period. Why?
